The mood at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had let in ten goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were concluding their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
The Campaign Unraveling?
Was Lazio's season unraveling, or did there exist a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager this summer, only for him to later acknowledge that the management had omitted to inform him about a registration embargo they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.
The Biancocelesti appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other opening fixtures, including the Rome derby. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to ascertain if they're getting better or self-destructing.
The Youngster's Unforeseen Presence
One individual continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season with Parma on loan and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to stay there for another season. The transfer ban forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.
He joined initially when Sarri was last in charge, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 Serie A appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those coming off the bench. Their former sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
Discovering His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of the player's talent. Labeled as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
