Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of positions created to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Decline

Though BLS was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its release once the closure began. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
