Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered extensive sudden floods, coastal inundation, mudslides, and fierce high-velocity gusts, prompting the evacuation of millions of people nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In the town of Pandan, one of the worst-hit regions, emergency crews recorded floodwaters climbing to the tops of houses and homes washed out by the powerful currents.

“Our personnel rescued fourteen people who were trapped on the roof surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. “A father also called in panic, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials confirmed two fatalities: one from drowning in Catanduanes and another who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Projected Path

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning while moving over the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 115 mph to 102 mph, but gusts were still reaching more than 275 km/h.

The cyclone is expected to continue weakening while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to accommodate 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for the missing persons had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is making cyclones stronger and common. This typhoon marks the twenty-first storm to hit the Philippines this year.

Scientists report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments suggest that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader issued an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the severe damage caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
