Presence
The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills with this clever paranormal narrative shot entirely through the eyes of the spirit. When a household including mother Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the filming device – representing the ghost – shadows their actions. Chloe seems sensing the poltergeist, and it looks like defensive toward her. Yet what is the reason? The premise is enjoyable that avoids overstaying, with a twist that may be unexpected. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, Sky Cinema Premiere
Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy
Cage fully commits to his eccentric image through this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a self-obsessed film star playing himself who accepts a $1m payday to visit a birthday party on the Spanish island for the rich superfan Javi. Recruited by government spies to spy on the suspected cartel boss, the actor's “nouveau shamanic acting ability” proves useful. October 11th, prime time, the Channel 4 network
This Creepy Thriller
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest stands strong despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in 1970s Colorado, several disappearances has made the children on edge. When Finney gets captured by the villain and imprisoned in a dungeon, he dreads a fatal end. Yet the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators offering help, as the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. October 11th, 10.50pm, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the struggle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for greed in this director's delightfully tacky biopic regarding the shamed TV preacher plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about profiting from the nation's religious faith. It's a riot of tacky decor, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, though Jessica Chastain achieves to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, 1.15am, the Film4 channel
