People who experienced abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism following their first meeting with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads Ending Clergy Abuse, stated that the Pope's choice to engage with them so soon in his papacy spoke volumes about his dedication to addressing the issue.

Worldwide Strict Policy Pushed

The organization is advocating for a global zero-tolerance policy that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a child. This policy has been implemented in the United States.

The Pope recognized that there is "opposition in certain regions of the world" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the role in spring, has inherited this persistent problem that has haunted the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to address the problem included an historic meeting on child abuse within the institution and revisions to church laws to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the policy is personal. The Canadian advocate revealed they were victimized by a clergy member who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"We trust this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they expressed. "We have the common objective, we want to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Encounter

Seven members of the organization, which includes victims and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was described as "very understanding" when listening to the account of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in Canada.

They added the leader was "tender" about their own experience and appeared "modest, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have long wanted a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they commented. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and very open and eager to collaborate with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is advocating that revisions to canon law will enable the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted experts and gathered materials that they will present to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The report also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for church leaders and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they informed the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This represents as much a challenge for him to engage in a dialogue as it was for us."

After the encounter, Hickey expressed optimism for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, coming together and establishing a relationship and continuing to strengthen that relationship is a step in the right direction," they stated.

They added that they shared with the pontiff: "Just because it's a dark chapter, I believe like we can alter how the narrative concludes - he appreciated that."
