The Legendary Anime Concludes a 27-Year Era in 2026

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation revealing a revised release plan for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of two dozen installments. The studio states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means more related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere in the interim.

Learning from Past Breaks

The One Piece anime had a half-year break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to enhance the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to prevent a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has been able to supply viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to extend its lead on the anime. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or more to compensate for time.

It's the end of an era for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between one episode and the following. Nowadays, anime production is organized in cours, with a couple at most coming out each annually, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
